Fablehaven Book 2

This post is the cover art I did for Fablehaven book 2. It was a fun book to work on. Brandon Mull is the author. He does such a great job it's always a challenge to make the artwork equal the storytelling inside. Check out the website at Fablehaven.com

Later!

Hey Brandon,
I was wondering what in the world you use for reference. Do you make a model of the piece, light it and take a picture? Because the rock looks amazing and I have no idea how you did that frog so well. The whole piece is done very well!

Because I went to school with Brandon I can tell you one of his secrets... He makes it up! He is so awesome at seeing things in his head, he hardly ever uses reference. At least he doesn't ususally use it for light and shadow. I'm not sure about reference for how animals look and such things.

The important thing is that Brandon is awesome.

Thanks Mike. I think I'm going to blush. You know I get embarrassed easily. And yes, I did forget to thank you for helping with The Wizard. Sorry about that. Thank you.

pretty sure i've emailed you once or twice but i'm another brandon dorman who now enjoys following your work. i'm going to buy your book just so i can put it on my coffee table and tell people, "did you see my new book?". won't fool them though... i can't draw worth jack (except now i'm ok at basic 3-d solids), teach math and coach water polo, swimming and a triathlon team in california. peace out, good luck with the new books and everything!

p.s. sorry i took a possible google email address for you. but you got the blogspot name so we're even.
